LLEWELLYN'S SPELL-A-DAY

Spell: Honoring the Apple

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

Mid-September marks the apple harvest in my Pacific Northwest. It's a time rich with meaning, for the apple is considered sacred in many traditions. The wood is often burned in ritual fires, while the peel-if peeled in one continuous strand and tossed over the right shoulder-may be scryed to reveal one's future spouse. (Woe to the marriage plans of she who breaks the peel!) Apple cider and hard cider make wonderful ritual libations and may be sipped during a divination session to enhance psychic powers and speed entry into the netherworlds, for the apple is associated with Avalon and the hidden Celtic underlands. A wand made of apple wood-particularly one you fashion yourself-is a powerful tool for directing energy and working with the Fae. Bless your local apple trees on Twelfth Night (January 6) with a cup of wassail poured over their roots.
